An underused lower level reborn as one hardworking room — a focused home office by day, a rich, enveloping lounge by night.
Our clients, a family in Park Slope, had a large lower level that had never really been put to use — storage, overflow, a place to avoid. They wanted it to finally earn its keep: a real home office during the day, and a place to unwind with a drink at night.
A cellar comes with real constraints — limited natural light, low ceiling lines, a tendency to feel like an afterthought. The goal was a space that felt intentional and warm on its own terms, never like a basement pressed into service.
We began with mood boards and renderings to test a rich, enveloping palette before a single wall was touched. Custom millwork carved out a dedicated bar and a quiet work zone, while layered, dimmable lighting and tactile materials let the room shift character from focused to moody without missing a beat.
The cellar is now the hardest-working floor in the house — a considered office by morning, a warm, self-assured lounge by evening. It never feels like a basement anymore, and it never feels like a compromise.
